As AI grows, it has been used in all aspects of life. Its application is being seen in all spheres of life. The applications of AI have extended across diverse sectors, playing a pivotal role in transforming how we approach various fields. Its utility is in healthcare, education, transportation, manufacturing, retail, finance, etc.

But, as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, formulating strong and effective computing systems is necessary for dependable and secure AI experiences. But there’s a problem: hardware breakthroughs must keep up with the advances in machine learning (ML) models and software development. This imbalance makes it difficult to build complete and secure full-stack systems. Furthermore, even while battery technology is developing, the market for smaller devices is outpacing these developments, which limits the potential strength and use of AI systems.

Consequently, Google has introduced Project Open Se Cura, an open-source framework designed to accelerate the development of secure, scalable, transparent, and efficient AI systems. This was formerly known as Project Sparrow within Google. Project Open Se Cura underscores Google’s commitment to open-source development. The initiative involves creating open-source design tools and intellectual property (IP) libraries to accelerate the growth of full-stack systems handling ML workloads. The collaborative co-design and development process aims to enhance system designs, focusing on security, efficiency, and scalability and empowering the next generation of AI experiences.

This project has been developed in close collaboration with important partners, including VeriSilicon, Antmicro, and lowRISC. The researchers emphasize that every partner has provided knowledge and resources essential to the development process. For example, lowRISC has given the project a clear root of trust and development and integration tools, guaranteeing a safe basis. Antmicro has offered expertise in open-source system-level software and tools for system simulation that use Renode. VeriSilicon has offered its expertise in commercialization, BSP (Board Support Package) development, IP design, and silicon design. These tools have allowed for developing a low-power AI system proof of concept by adding safe machine learning capabilities to the IP library.

The researchers said they look ahead to further enhancing and developing Open Se Cura openly. They are actively seeking additional partnerships with institutions such as Cambridge University (for CHERI innovations) and the University of Michigan (for low-power and generative AI).

Google expresses excitement about exploring the possibilities with these new tools and encourages the broader open-source community to join in and contribute. The collaborative effort aims to drive innovations and create new AI experiences that are secure, scalable, and highly efficient. The researchers anticipate collaboration with the open-source community to lead the way in a new era of AI advancements.
